• I use Skype a lot.  My family is in England and we use it with a webcam to chat often.  I have also found it useful for client chats as I can put a headphone on and type with both hands.  I find it impossible to type with one hand!

Skype is a free program that goes computer to computer. All you need is a microphone and in a lot of computers, they are built in.   If you would like to contact me via Skype, please email for my user name as I have it restricted to only people on my contact list.  It’s very easy to use and the quality is often better than a cell phone.

Perfect gift for the book lover.  I like to read!  A LOT!  I also have about a dozen different book lights because I keep buying them trying to find the perfect one that works for me. Many seem to be fine but the light is so dim that I can’t read the bottom of the page. Top of the page is just fine but halfway down I find myself struggling and squinting. Ok, you can blame that on age too.   🙂

I finally found a book light that really works.  Not only is the light bright enough but the arm is long enough that I can turn pages without interference. It is the LUMEN wireless LED book/computer light. It runs on batteries or plugs into the USB port on your laptop.  It has a long flexible neck that can be positioned anywhere.  I tried finding it on the web but it seems to be a Costco exclusive.  It’s the perfect gift for your favorite bibliophile.

  • I like to decorate mats around paintings and I discovered that using Colored Pencils with Rebecca Baer’s Petite and Elegant stencils work wonderfully.  A few things to be aware of.  Prismacolor pencils are soft wax based to enable lovely layering and blending.  As such it sometimes produces a not so sharp line, especially on mats that have been custom painted with acrylic paint.  I found that the less expensive brands, such as Prang, or even Crayola, work better in these instances.  As always TEST, TEST, TEST.  In a pinch put a specific pencil in the freezer for a while to make it less ‘soft’.

With a little practice you will learn what works for you but I am totally thrilled with the results.  I used a regular sized stencil on this painted mat.  I think it would have been better with Prismacolor Verithin pencils or a lesser brand but it was my first attempt and I still like it.  Rebecca’s website.

  • Colored Pencils 16.11.2008 Comments Off on Thoughts on Epackets and printing

When I was at Hoot [Heart of Ohio Tole Convention] I had some discussions with students about e packets. They voiced their concerns about having a not-so-good printer and poor reproduction.  I pointed out the disparity in color reproduction on the packets I provided for class, from the full size scan [which was darker and cooler] vs. the photograph, which was spot on as far as color.

With colored pencils the need for exact color reproduction doesn’t really apply as absolutely named pencils are used.  No mixing, no matching, just going with what comes out of the pencils.  I also suggested that the pdf e packet could be taken to Staples, Kinko’s etc. and printed out there.  (These places might require a permission email as it is copyrighted material but I’m more than happy to provide that upon request.  I would limit the number of copies of course.)

We also discussed the color on individual monitors and most of us realize that the range of color reproduction is enormous, but with named pencils, is this that important?  It might actually encourage more instinctive painting without relying totally on copy/reproduction, thereby producing artistic growth.

I’m interested in your thoughts on this so maybe we can get a dialog going and learn from each other. Please register for my blog so that your comments can be added.

Mario just turned one in October – this photo was taken at 11 months, and is a Halloween pic.  He was just ‘monkeying around.’

This morning I sat at my kitchen table watching a squirrel run up and down and round and about and back again.  Most entertaining and very enjoyable.  I took an extra half hour of time for myself before starting work.  We all hurry through life missing so many simple pleasures and you know what? The world did NOT come to an end during that time.

My version of taking the time to “smell the roses”.  What have you done today for yourself?

Even though we’ve been up in Ohio for about 6 years now I am still thrilled when Deer wander through our back yard.  Yesterday a Doe came closer than usual. All went well until a gust of wind moved the rocking chair right outside the window where I was standing.   She didn’t like that one bit and started stamping her foot.  This is the closest they’ve been to the house – she was not 20 yards away from me.
